Announcing our new Windows 2000 computers! |
We have been very fortunate to be able to replace all our aging Windows 95 computers. The new computers are Dell Optiplex Pentium III machines running at 667MHz and using the new Windows 2000 operating system. Hardware-wise, besides a great boost in speed, the biggest new difference is that all the machines now have CD-RW drives as well as Zip drives that can handle both 100MB and 250MB media. All the machines also have integrated sound cards, but interested users will have to provide their own headphones to utilize these. Having speakers on the individual machines would be too disruptive.
On the software side we have newer versions of many of our core programs. Microsoft Office has been upgraded to Office 2000. The newest Eudora is now available. We now have SigmaPlot 2000 on station CTL12, and Adobe Acrobat (not just the reader) is available on CTLm, CTLg, CTL4, CTL5 and CTL11.
Every attempt has been made to ease your transition to this new platform. The CTLfaq (Frequently Asked Questions) has been updated to help you learn about the changes. Don't forget that you can easily search the CTLfaq for answers to most questions you may have!
Note: Perhaps one of the biggest
changes involves the "My Documents" area. You will find references to this all over
the place. My Documents is meant to replace the Home Scratch area and is
where CTL account users are expected to store their personal files. Home Scratch still exists
for backwards compatibility, but your files have been moved from there to your My Documents
folder. The Home Scratch areas will be eventually be removed.
Hopefully, there will not be too many problems, however, there are a tremendous number of behind-the-scene changes and it is likely that some "tweaking " will be needed once people start using these new systems. Please let Steve Lasley know if you experience any problems or have any questions.
